³ aka Cubed is a music player for your Android phone. It comes with some advanced features like automatic cover download, last.fm scrobbling and has a very sophisticated optical presentation giving you some options on how to browse your music. All the effects run very smooth without lagging. There are also some widgets with different sizes to fit your needs on the homescreen.
Although Cubed will almost certainly generate some AHA-effect because of its fancy and experimental optical presentation its usability and stability remains good. You can sort your music by artist or album and can create and save playlists. It offers everything you would expect from a good music player and also has some little extras.

This app is based on the multi-format 1D/2D barcode image processing library zxing. It can handle all codes I can think of. More and more people print QR codes on their business cards which makes it really easy to add them to your address book. Well designed app blogs, like us (;-)) show QR codes to make it easier to find apps on the market. With this barcode scanner you can profit from this pleasant trend. It’s highly customizable and works well in production although some product codes are hard to find on the web afterwards, but that’s not the app’s fault.
A killer feature I almost overlooked is “Share via barcode” which creates codes for applications (market urls), from bookmarks, contacts or the content of the clipboard which another person then can just scan themself. Good-bye bluetooth pairing, so long ‘send via email’. Sweet stuff!

K-9 Mail is an advanced email client for Android. It comes with a whole lot of features the default mail client lacks and all kinds of protocols like IMAP, POP3 and Exchange via WebDAV. The main target is to make it easy handling a lot of messages even if they are located in different accounts. This is achieved for example by a shared inbox and marking the messages with different (customizable) colors regarding which account they belong to (as seen in the screenshots) but also some other handy things like different identities. It’s irrelevant if you use one or multiple accounts. It rocks either way ;-)
K-9 is one of the first apps I installed on my Android phone and it still is one of my favorites. Setup is straight forward and the overall usability is good. If your email provider supports push-mail you should deactivate interval checking. It saves energy by leaving your phone in standby and your emails arrive almost instantly.
The language on the screenshots is german, but K-9 supports more than 20 different languages at the moment this article was written.

SwiFTP is an FTP-Server app. It enables the wireless access to the data located on your smartphone. The setup is really straightforward and once started you can access your phone’s data with any device that features a ftp-client. Especially when wanting to just quickly copy some files between computer and smartphone this comes in handy as you don’t have to plug in your phone via usb but just simply start SwiFTP.
Unfortunately, Dave Revell quit maintaining it. It still works, but if anyone wants to pick this nice project up please contact him.
